The Sea Silk Lip Balm by MARA: My Review

I want to start this review by noting that MARA has since updated their packaging to a classic lip balm squeeze-y tube with a lip applicator. The one I’m reviewing, the original version of the MARA Sea Silk Lip Balm* came in an aluminum tube, no applicator and with a small twist-off cap. One issue with the old packaging—though I personally didn’t experience it just yet—was that it could ooze out if squeezed incorrectly and might constantly leak around the cap when put back on.

The original Sumer Fridays Lip Vanilla Butter Balm (my holy grail) had the same aluminum packaging, and they too, updated their packaging to what it is today. Since the Summer Fridays balm is my all-time favorite, I inevitably compare any new lip balm I try to it. So, why venture out and try something new when I already have a go-to I’m obsessed with ? Well, as a proud and dedicated beauty junkie, I’m always looking to see what’s new, what’s good, what’s the hot shit and what really delivers. Summer Fridays will always be my numero uno. But MARA has been on my Sephora ‘Loves’ list for a long time. and after finishing my seventh empty of the Summer Fridays balm, I figured it was time to give something else a shot !

I’ve mentioned a few cons, but now let’s highlight some pros. This vegan lip balm features a very delicate herbal & floral scent. Its texture is similar to a lip sleeping mask—thicker and lip-hugging. I love slathering it on overnight, but I’ve also been reaching for it throughout the day to keep my lips looking and feeling soft. It’s slightly thicker than Summer Fridays but has that same lip buttery melting feel during application.

I appreciate the nourishing ingredients in this lippie. MARA’s Algae Plumping Complex™ features a blend of sustainably sourced, immunity-boosting red and brown algae that’s said to plump and smooth lips. Additionally, I love seeing the use of mango and shea butters in the formula. I always look for these ingredients in lip products because they indicate deep hydration for dry lips and a luxurious feel. Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm features shea and murumuru. The vegan waxes in both balms lock in moisture, keeping my lips soft, supple and soothed. As far as longevity, if I’m comparing the two, SF lasts longer on the lips.

So far, a couple months into use, I’ve been able to keep my applicator mess free – but I am curious about the new one. I have a few other lippies that are on my radar but I think I’ll be reaching for this one months to come !
