So you just flew into JFK, and maybe you’re taking a different airline for your connecting flight in a different terminal.. well, how do you get from point A to point B ?
That was our question too. I started pulling up maps on my phone as soon as we landed, but the maps didn’t explain how to get from one terminal to the next, especially ones that are quite far from each other. Well we thought we could just walk there but it turns out that’s not possible.
Well first let me explain to you how massive JFK is. JFK is 8 terminals and each terminal is completely separate. Meaning each has it’s own security, check-in’s, etc. It’s so huge, you have to take a shuttle bus to get from one terminal to another. Got a good image yet ?
I flew Delta Airlines, and ended up in the Delta terminal, which is terminal 4. But needed to get to terminal 1 for Japan Airlines. Now you can’t just walk there as we assumed. Like really, you can’t walk there. Don’t even try it. You actually have to take a shuttle. We didn’t know this until we asked someone.
Honestly, the best way to get around the airport is pretty simple.
Just ask staff. No need to pull up maps and get all crazy. Just find staff, security, etc, and they will direct you.
From the Delta terminal we found a sign that said shuttle bus. We asked the customer service associate and she told us exactly what bus to take and where to go from there. In terminals themselves we just asked staff ! Before we knew it, we were checked in to our international flight, made our way through TSA, and were seated by our gates. By the way, all of this took us an hour including getting our boarding passes and making it through security.
JFK Airport Tips –
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Find any staff member and ask how to get from one terminal to another. They will direct you ! That was seriously all we did to handle JFK. Many speak different languages are will be glad to help !
- Give yourself enough time to between flights if you’re connecting. We had 4 hours which was more than enough time. But I can’t imagine having to get from point A to point B with only an hour in between. Especially if security check points are long.
- Explore your terminal ! Even if it’s a hike. You may find some delicious food or a way less busier bathroom. Maybe even some cute souvenirs.
Hope this helps a bit, and good luck !
